It's hard to believe that Spring is already here. We just had a huge blizzard which dumped alot of needed moisture in our area.

The store has been holding it's own. We are definetely ready for Summer!! We have already started to get new merchandise in. COLORADO FALL IS JUST BEAUTIFUL!

The Aspen trees are now turning into those beautiful oranges, yellows and reds. They are just gorgeous!! This coming weekend will be just beautiful to take a trip up into those Colorado Mountains and get a look for yourself. An absolute beautiful time of year.

Well, Highpark Outfitters just got done with our Archery Hunters. They saw lots of Elk and had a good week for hunting. Little warm during the day but crisp at night. The hunters had an opportunity but were unsuccessful with their shots. We are now awaiting for our 1st Rifle season which begins in 1 1/2 weeks. Then it will be fast and furious. Well, Labor Day Weekend is here and where did the summer go. We are now done with all of our shows for the summer hopefully you were able to come by one of them and see us. It was sure hectic.

BOY IS IT HOT!!!

Hopefully, you are staying cooler than what we are, it has been in the mid 90's to 100 for the last month and no change in sight.

Well, we just got finished with the Cheyenne Frontier Days and we had a great show. It is nice to meet so many people. We will be in Mason City, Iowa next week for the National Trappers Convention, so if you are in the area we would love to see you. It will be held at the Fairgrounds.

Well, our Auction went off with a Bang! We had great weather and a big turn out. We sold over 900 lots and the sale went from 9:00 in the morning until 6:00 that night. Another big success thank goodness. It will be the same time next year the first Saturday after Memorial Weekend. Hopefully, if you did not make this years maybe next year.

Well, it is that time already. We are now done with all of our shows until next January. Boy, is that nice. We did have a great season.

It's Show Time

Well, Dan and Ethan are set up right now at the Cheyenne Frontier Days. Our booth is set up in the Exhibit Hall E-99. If your going to be there make sure you stop and say HI. They are there until Sunday, July 29th at 6:00 p.m.

We leave there and go to Goshen, IN for the National Trappers Convention. We will have a booth there also August 2nd - 5th at the State Fair Grounds. The boys are really excited about this one, they waite all year for it!!!

We leave there and go to Shipsewana, IN and set up there on Tuesday and Wednesday at the largest Flea Market. So it will be alot of fun. Hopefully, one of these shows might interest you or be in your area.

The store will also be open 7 days a week with lots of great merchandise just waiting for you. If there is anything you need, just let us know we would love to help you out.

Boy, it sure is HOT!!!! We have been reaching 100 degrees for the last few days. We need more rain badly.

We now have new merchandise arriving daily. Today we got in lots of new knives. We have Pottery and McCall Candles coming in any day now, so please keep checking our blog or check out our website.

Oh, by the way we will no longer be sending out catalogs. The latest postal changes have caused alot of problems for anyone sending out mailers. It now goes by size not weight. It increased from .58 to atleast $1.25. We also have to modify our catalog to meet their regulations now and that does not necessarily mean it will be sent, it is all on interpretation of the clerk processing your mail. So we decided not to send any more out. Sorry, you can order off of our website or can call the store 7 days a week.

Summer Beginning

Well, our auction went off without a hitch. We had wonderful weather that day. We sold from 9:00a.m. until 7:30 p.m. with over 900 lots. We have to thank all the people that showed up from out of state and of course everyone from here in Colorado. They came from all 4 corners of the state. We are already looking forward to next year which will be the first weekend after Memorial Day so make sure you mark your calendar.

We are starting to get very busy in the store now with most of the schools finally out. We are getting in alot of new merchandise, so make sure you stop by on your travels through our wonderful state or at least check out our website.

Auction Update

Just to let you know we are starting to get in some really neat items for our 5th Annual Western Trade Auction on June 2nd. We have a Covered Wagon, Freight Wagon, old cart these are just a few examples. Also, we will have some great guns this year to. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate with us, we just had 6" to 2 feet of snow yesterday! Typical Colorado weather. Everybody keeps saying we need the moisture, I guess our pastures are finally turning green hopefully, we will have a great hay cutting this summer.

Brochure almost ready for our Deer, Elk and Bear hunting for this September on the 4th generation cattle ranch that has just opened up for hunting. Call us if interested.

Changes & Waiting

Now, the waiting game begins. Colorado Division of Wildlife won't be holding any of their drawings until May and June for Deer and Elk. It's called wait and see and the anticipation grows!

Also, the store is busy. We are always getting in new merchandise. But, we are getting ready for our 5th Annual Western Trade Auction too. Already starting to get in some really unique items. Keep looking at our auction page.

This year we will not be attending the National Muzzleloader Shoot in June. Our Annual Western Trade Auction will be on June 2nd and Dan would need to leave on the 5th to get back to Indiana and set up. The show starts that Saturday. We are normally there for 2 1/2 weeks. But, Dan has also been really busy with his Animal Control Business and he will be doing a big job for a Water Works Department removing Geese which has to be completed by June 30th, 2007 by Federal Law. So, there is just not enough time. Hopefully, next year.

Fur season over and Spring is here

Hi there, well the fur season is now over. The numbers were down a little from last year, which we contribute that to the bad weather we had this season and the inability to even get to some of the ranches that we contract to. The prices seem to be stable, so that was good, but not as good as last year.

Remember, Big Game Licenses will be due the first part of April, so make sure you get them mailed so you don't miss out on any points. Also, we will be arranging and guiding Deer, Elk and Bear Hunts this September and October on a private ranch that we trap on. This is a first time opportunity as this 4th generation working cattle ranch is now being opened for the first time for the general public. For more information contact us about this fantastic opportunity.

The store has been pretty busy, lots of spring-breakers right now. We will also be doing quite a few Estate Sales and Auctions this spring, like we usually do. That's what keeps us different from everybody else. This year, our 5th Annual Western Trade Auction will be held on June 2nd, 2007. You can get updates and flyers on our website or call the store.

Oh, by the way it was just brought to our attention that we have a disgruntled customer. He purchased two head mounts from us over 1 1/2 years ago, each of them a few months apart. We do not feel that we are obligated to stand behind the product with as much time that has gone by, and with the Mounts being out of our possession. We have sold thousands of mounts over the last 15 years and he is the first person to have mentioned a problem. We wanted to mention this as an update and that if anyone is to deal (buy, sale or trade) any item of plant or animal origin, they need to be aware of the risks that come with this because of predatory bugs, moths, beetles and the like. Anyway, this is what has been going on with us and the store over the last several months.

Fur Season coming to an end

Here it is almost the end of February, boy where did the winter go. Dan and Ethan have been busy trapping and doing Predator Control trapping Coyotes for our area ranchers and it has been a tough season. He has over 20 ft drifts in alot of the areas and this is how it has been for the past 2 months. We had 5 weeks in a row with snow over the weekends leaving anywhere from 12 to 36" each time. The fur harvest has been pretty good considering the conditions it sure takes Dan alot longer each day. Next year we will be better prepared. We had gotten spoiled with the Colorado weather the last 15 years. The store has been busy and we are already starting to do our shows that we do each year and getting ready for our annual auction. Finishing up with Colorado Hunting Seasons

Boy, time sure goes by fast. We have just finished our 3rd Rifle Hunting Season and getting ready to start our 4th on Wednesday. Over all this year I think the seasons have been productive. We have seen a lot of game out in the woods and a lot of animals have been harvested. The seasons has been a challenge with the unpredictable weather. One day it might be 70 and 80 degrees and the next we may have a snow storm dumping a foot of snow. Typical Colorado weather you just never know. It has been exciting and fun. This year Dan and Ethan both got really nice Mule Deer so we are going to do a Pedalstal Mount with both of them. That should look great. With Thanksgiving just next week that means Dan will start his Predator Control for the winter which he is looking forward to. He loves this time of year. Shows @ Hunting Updates

It's been awhile, just wanted to update you. Yes, we are still doing shows. Dan has been in Indiana all month. He just finished up with the Fall Shoot for the National Muzzleloaders Assc. in Friendship, Indiana. It was alright had alot of rain this year. He has a couple more shows in the next week then he will be home and definetly ready to go hunting!! Archery season is still going on until Sunday, September 24th and Muzzleloader season ended last Sunday. It looks like some really nice Elk and Deer have been taken this year. That is a good sign. The hunters say they have been seeing alot of game, more than the previous years at this time. Right now our mountains are getting a lot of heavy wet snow. This should help push the animals down to the lower elevations. We will try and keep you updated on how the rifle seasons are doing and how the local weather is. Until then have a great day!

4th Annual Auction and Current Shows

Well, we had our 4th Annual Auction last Saturday. We had a great turnout, even though it was a 100 degrees. We had over 350 buyers from several different states with a total of 500 to 600 people. We thank everyone for making it a great success. We look forward to next year! We are now up at Cheyenne Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming we have a booth set up there. Seems to be a good turn out and a good show so far. We get back on Monday and leave Tuesday for Hutchinson, Kansas to set up a booth at the National Trappers Convention at the State Fair Grounds. Summer plugging along

Well, back from Friendship and the heat of the midwest at the National Muzzleloading Champion Shoot. Traffic was good and gas prices were not all that bad. We can't do anything about it anyway so you might as well suck it up and live with it. Have been doing damage control trapping for coyotes and trying to get stuff ready for our 4th Annual Western Trade Auction at our store on July 15th, 2006. This weekend we gather and brand cattle ,around 180 head and next week I go to New Mexico to pickup a load of furniture. Ethan drew an Elk and Antelope tag and I drew a 3rd season Buck Deer Tag and an Antelope. Applied for alot more but will take what we can get. The summer season here has really cranked up and the tourist are buzzing like bees. It is still real dry and the fire danger is extreme but not near as bad as 2002. Left over licenses will be available through the Division of Wildlife about the 3rd week of the month and then that process becomes a rat race. It's time again for our summer shows. We are now in Friendship, Indiana for the National Muzzleloader Spring Shoot. It's been going great, the turn out is really good and the weather has not been to bad, a little rain but mostly sunny. Everybody seems to be glad summer is here and it is vacation time. BIGHORN,GOAT AND BEAR LICENSE DRAWINGS ARE COMPLETE

Well, another license drawing in Colorado for mountain goat , bighorn and desert sheep , along with black bear is complete , and we did not draw any of the above this year .We now are waiting for our next shot , to draw one of the coveted 185 shiras moose licenses . That drawing is on May 16 , but I won't hold my breath. Later in the month the other draws for deer , elk and antelope will be held ....
Have been trapping lots of nuisance critters in the past week , mostly skunks and squirrels but the beaver work is really picking up as well . Also picked up and scouted another 15,000 acre ranch for coyote control work this fall .Should be a great piece of ground . We'll know soon enough .UNTIL NEXT TIME , DAN

StartingTo Get Geared Up

Well, it's late april and we are getting ready for this upcoming trapping and hunting seasons.

We have been so busy trying to catch up from this last season that it seems as though we will never catch up . This last season we ended up with 290 coyotes, 68 bobcats , 40 some odd fox and a bunch of coon,beaver, skunks and rats. Also a mountain lion.

Right now the store ( Traders of the Bighorn) is busy while being open 7 days a week , and we are also trapping nuisance wildlife as well. The beavers and skunks have been bad this year so far and hopefully we can get caught up by the end of May when we take off to start our show season.

We will be in Friendship Indiana in June and September for the Muzzleloading Championships, Cheyenne Wyoming @ the FRONTIER DAYS in July and in Hutchison Kansas in August for the National Trappers Convention. On top of that we have our annual auction at our store on Saturday July 15th where we sell 100's of lots of guns , saddles , spurs, indian artifacts, coins, furs, hides, antiques and collectibles and lots more!!

As you can tell we will be quite busy. We also have to scout more trapping ground , get the trapline and gear ready and do more nuisance work in between...Sounds like fun, Huh?

Additionally , we will be hunting Deer, Elk, and Bear this fall along with whatever else we are lucky enough to draw tags for - maybe Mountain goa , Bighorn sheep or Moose. We will keep our fingers crossed.

Speaking of tags the results of the draw will begin May 4 and continue through early June for the Deer and Elk.

The main purpose of our blog is to let you all know what is going on in our world. We will try to keep you updated about our hunting and trapping as well as the store and where we are going including things that relate to the store as well. I WILL TRY TO ADD PICTURES ALSO

Updates on weather conditions and hunting season success will be added as well , along with new products for the store whether it be a new shipment of blankets, or kachinas or a giant set of deer antlers that was just acquired. Anything that relates to hunting, trapping, and trading we probably do.

The Trading post that we own and operate is what we do. Some people don't know what that means but imagine a 1840's Trading Post with a contemperary flare.
